Exploration 5- Data Visualization Analysis
Exploration 5 - Data Visualization Analysis
For my visual data analysis I wanted to take note of what is present in my students’ creations - what is present for them and how they chose to explore identity will be my next inquiry. To do this, with a central focus for my action-research thinking, I planned a three-day long collaboration with the music teacher. We went about looking into how and why artists participate in portraiture, a cause creation, and finally the making of an identity map. Through all of this, it was interesting to take note of what students chose to include (or exclude) from their creations.
DATA:
There was a total of 27 students who participated in person (remote students kept their artwork).
Stand-out stats:
Hair - 20 out of 27 students included their hair in their self-portrait.
Career/Interest - 15 out of 27 students mentioned a career they want to pursue or an interest/hobby that comes across blatantly in their self-portrait.
Shirt graphic - 21 out of 27 students included a graphic of some sort on their shirt (sometimes matching their career/interest).
Background - 9 out of 27 students drew a background behind their self-portrait
Relevant background - 6 out of 27 students had a background relevant to their career/interest.
Visible emotion - 24 out of 27 students had a visible emotion
When going into this visual analysis, I did not pinpoint these five markers. I wanted to go into the ‘finding’ in their works open minded, looking for patterns - as opposed to looking for a certain criteria that would support a particular conclusion.
Purpose:
I went about collecting data in this manner because I felt as though it would give me an authentic and meaningful look into how students saw themselves and how they portrayed those realizations and observations. My methodology focuses on how identity is portrayed through a collaboration between art and music. I expanded on this thinking to be the topic of my mini-action research project. These portraits were what I used to fully develop the three day collaboration and plan the following two days based on how students represented themselves - Who are you and what do you care about?
